Yes, there are free ASO tools for indie developers. RespectASO is free and open source, ASO Suite tracks up to 20 keywords for free, AsoBeast can be self-hosted for free (AGPL-3.0), and TrackASO's browser tools (100-byte counter, keyword field helper, keyword mixer, most-searched keywords) need no account. To track rankings for free, search each keyword on an iPhone in each country once a week and log the position in a spreadsheet, or use a free tier. Paying starts to make sense when you need many keywords checked automatically every night.

A free workflow that works
- Find terms: search your seed words on the App Store and note the top 10 (keyword difficulty guide).
- Combine words: turn your shortlist into 2- and 3-word phrases with the keyword mixer.
- Fill the keyword field: check it with the 100-byte counter, which flags repeats and words already in your name or subtitle.
- Track a few terms: use a free tier or check by hand after each release.
When paying is worth it
- You track more terms or countries than a free tier allows.
- You want ranks checked while you're not looking, with history to compare before and after a release.
- You want competitor positions next to yours.
### How to track App Store keyword rankings for free (step by step)
- List 10–20 keywords and the countries you care about.
- Once a week, at the same time, search each one on an iPhone set to that country's store, and note your position (scroll, or write "not in top 50").
- Keep one row per keyword, country and date in a spreadsheet, plus a column for the date of each metadata change.
- When the list outgrows an hour a week, move to a free tier (ASO Suite ≤20 keywords), self-host (RespectASO, AsoBeast), or use TrackASO's one free rank check a day on the home page.
Limits of the free route: it's manual, it's slow across many countries, positions in the iTunes Search API may differ from what an iPhone shows, and you have no history from before you started.
